Etihad Ibb.. fighter Eagles in the Yemeni League

By Mareb Al-ward

Etihad Ibb team

Etihad IBB is a football sports club based in IBB city of the same name, founded in 1992 after the merged of Al-Fatwa and Al Salam clubs, two old clubs that grew up in the sixties and seventies respectively.

Since then, the team has been competing in the league of top-flight clubs except for some periods in which they drop back to the second-tier for financial reasons and poor results.

The Etihad is known for its "Eagles" title in a sign of strength and ferocity in various competitions in which it participates at the local and external levels.

Some analysts describe the club as a source of football talent that other clubs benefit more than because of its weak financial resources that do not allow it to maintain stars and give them proper pay.

Many of these players have become local and national stars such as Abdulsalam al-Gharbani, Fakri al-Habishi, Fazal al-Arumi and others.

Although the team has done well in some seasons, it has not achieved many titles, and it was the best achievement to win the 1998 President's Cup. In the league, he achieved runner-up status in 2012 after losing the playoff match with his neighbor, the Shaab Ibb.

In the current season, he competed in Group I and was close to qualifying for the semi-finals, but lost against the group leader Ahli Sana 'a team and dropped to fourth place, an achievement for management due to team conditions and late preparation.

The team's basic outfit is red and the reserve is white, and around these colors fans crowd behind the team wherever it is especially if the matches in IBB.

Derby matches

The Ibb derby has always been characterized by competition, strength, enthusiasm, and crowd attendance, regardless of the level of the two teams or their ranking in the league.

The derby is considered one of the strongest derbies in Yemeni football, if not the best, in the opinion of many analysts, given that it maintains the peculiarity of competition and strength even in the worst conditions for two or one of the teams, in addition to the influence played by the fans, whether in Al-Kabsi Stadium or May 22 Stadium.

The rivalry between the Shaab and the Etihad may be stronger than it was in the past, when the two clubs were the shaab and the Al-fatwa, which would later be the Al-salam . both of them later united under the name of the  Etihad.

The numbers of the matches between the two clubs from the 1998/1997 season until the 2013/2014 season indicate 25 matches, with Al-Shaab winning ten of them and scoring 29 goals, while Al-Ittihad won six, scored 24 goals and tied in nine matches, only three of which ended in a goalless draw.
